Calling via Wi-Fi

Improve your mobile reception, even where there is no network coverage.

How does it work? What are Wi-Fi calls?

Calling over Wi-Fi is an advanced communication technology that allows voice calls to be made via a Wi-Fi network instead of the traditional mobile network. In the telecom world, calling over Wi-Fi is also known by the abbreviation VoWiFi, which stands for Voice over Wi-Fi.

Simple

You don’t need a special app to enjoy this feature; just activate it in your device settings.

Automatic

Your smartphone automatically searches for the strongest network for calls, whether it’s the Wi-Fi network or Orange's mobile network.

Comfortable

Call anywhere in Belgium with your smartphone via Wi-Fi, even if you don’t receive a 2G or 4G signal.

No Extra Costs

You pay no more than you would for a normal call, regardless of whether you are calling via Wi-Fi or the mobile network. A call via Wi-Fi is handled just like a call on Orange's mobile network.

Availability VoWiFi as an Indoor Coverage Solution

More and more homes and office buildings are insulated according to the latest insulation standards. In such highly insulated buildings, the principle of the Faraday cage often occurs: electromagnetic signals from the mobile network are disrupted by the dense insulation material.

VoWiFi is the ideal, accessible solution to improve indoor coverage in these cases, both for remote workers and businesses.

Remote workers can provide mobile coverage in their home office and other areas of their home thanks to the WiFi Comfort option

Businesses with limited surface or smaller branches can provide mobile coverage over 200 m² through Wi-Fi calling, thanks to Connected Business combined with an Orange mesh Wi-Fi solution.

Larger companies can set up tunneling between their Wi-Fi stations, allowing for a seamless connection throughout the building. For more information, please contact your account manager.

Frequently Asked Questions Do you have a question?

Practical tests show that calling over Wi-Fi requires an average speed of only 76 kb/s. In comparison, a YouTube video of average quality (480p) requires a speed of 2500 kb/s. A call via Wi-Fi therefore consumes 40 times less than a YouTube video.
This allows multiple VoWiFi calls to occur simultaneously without overloading the Wi-Fi network.
As with any internet connection over Wi-Fi, you should only connect to Wi-Fi networks that you know and trust. The VoWiFi technology itself is a reliable and efficient communication method. Calls are encrypted by Orange based on SIM card security. Thanks to our end-to-end encryption, your calls are just as secure as if they were taking place on the traditional mobile network.
Orange is a pioneer in Belgium for calling over Wi-Fi; since 2018, hundreds of thousands of Orange customers have comfortably used Wi-Fi calling. Sending and receiving SMS has also been possible at Orange for several years when connected via Wi-Fi. This is convenient when you, for example as a remote worker, need to log in to certain applications with an SMS, which can also be done via Orange VoWiFi.
