Project description
TRES together with Keysight Technologies and Orange aims to realise a 5G use case for autonomous and green mobility. In Leuven, a 5G network, with smart city poles and a fibre-optic network, will be extensively tested to enable autonomous (public) transport in the city. 5G mobile networks meet the high requirements for autonomous mobility. In the short term, an ecological electric shuttle service will be offered, for residents and visitors between the city outskirts and the city centre. This can also be used for logistics services. This technology is 24/7 deployable, environmentally friendly, safer and reduces the number of cars in the city. It is also easily scalable and uses AI to refine and improve decisions.
This 5G project uses Orange Belgium's network and has been selected by the Federal Government of Economy for subsidies to accelerate the rollout and the implementation of 5G use cases in Belgium.
Why is 5G essential?
5G is the enabler for deployment and use of autonomous vehicles. The three main characteristics of 5G are important for this 5G project:
- eMBB (Enhanced Mobile Broadband) offers higher bandwidth for both uploading and downloading data, enabling HD upload streaming videos.
- uRLLC (Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication) applications are supported, such as remote control of autonomous vehicles (once provided by vendors).
- mMTC (Massive Machine Type Communication) facilitates a large number of connected devices with low bandwidth, for example, on-board sensors. Looking ahead, there will also be a growing application of V2X (vehicle-to-any) IoT communication in the future.

Wireless 5G connectivity adds dynamism to the information, previously constrained by static data due to fixed connections. The incorporation of 5G with network slicing guarantees both capacity and video stream speed. Further context is added to the images through the application of Artificial Intelligence, which converts the wealth of data in the images into actionable information.

Why is 5G essential?
5G provides substantially higher capacity, bandwidth, and speed compared to current 4G networks. It allows for specific users to receive priority treatment, ensuring guaranteed bandwidth for applications like those used by the police. Also, the slicing capability permits a single device to transmit multiple applications through distinct slices. For example, communication applications can be directed to the internet, while camera traffic can be routed via a private slice to AI software in a data center.
